IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Websites
#4
In the U.S., the office of Ocean Exploration and Research (oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/) is a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) which runs under the auspices of the office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR). The Ocean Exploration and Research's website (OCR) offers one of the sciences to students for grades 5 to
12 called ocean science.
Not only does the site offer the past
and current research results, it offers educational tools for teachers to use
to help students get into gear into the schematics of logic and scientific
approach into learning about the world around them. There are books that can
also be bought and can be used as learning aids to create a lesson plan. From
knowing what the topic is covering to having a small experiment to explore the
research process, OCR (oceanexplorer.noaa.gov) is an excellent tool that a novice teacher can use to
help introduce students into the complication of science. Despite the ongoing
government shutdown, OCR (oceanexplorer.noaa.gov) have a few feeds to review their progress from last
year through social media like Facebook and Twitter. Thus, I strongly recommend
purchasing their books to have a benchmark to start off the science into the curriculum.
As
OCR )oceanexplorer.noaa.gov) quotes from one of their books, “Curiosity, desire for knowledge, and quest
for adventure continue to motivate modern explorers. But today, there are
additional reasons to explore Earth’s ocean, including climate change, energy,
human health, ocean health, innovations, research, and ocean literacy.” Isn’t
that quote ring true to the reason we’re here to teach about literacy?
