IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #6
CommonLit (www.commonlit.org) is a website available at no cost that offers instructional materials to support literacy and development for student grades 3-12. Resources are researched-based, aligned with Common Core State Standards, and are created by teachers, for teachers.
One first resource that appears at the top of the main menu includes a blog. In that blog you can locate an array of topics that range from ways to help new students to actively participate in the classroom, to unit plans targeted for literacy instruction. The blogs are positive ways you one can interact, learn and communicate with other professionals all with a common goal.
CommonLit has a library of fiction and non-fiction for 3rdthrough 12 grade classroom instruction. Search and filter feature offers an easy way to browse and locate by grade level, theme, genre, literary device, or common core standard. When a particular topic is chosen, in that library, one has access to related media that includes and not limited to instructional videos, articles and assignments in digital format for those students accessing online classrooms, literature in digital format, etc. All topics and lessons in the CommonLit library include links and resources to other related texts and pairings.
Units are made up of assignments already created and almost all assignments have links to media and pairing questions. Assessments, lesson modifications, alternative lessons, graphic organizers and other strategies are all a part of the features and resources added to lessons made available. All units have links or additional resources to complete a lesson from start to finish.
In order to get full access to use the website in its entirely, one must register, which is free, and all resources can be accessed at any time. CommonLit is another great resource for educators most especially when planning thematic units. A simple browse of a topic will generate an entire list of material and educator support available on one site. All material entered into this site by teachers, for teachers, are all researched based and linked to the State Common Core Standards.
