Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #6
Power
Up What Works (https://powerupwhatworks.org/home)
was created to support teachers and administrators of students with
disabilities through the integration of technology. However, there is a great
list of resources that can benefit all students. As with all resources and
strategies, not every thing will fit into every classroom and every style of
teaching. Sometimes teachers must pick and choose what will best accommodate
the needs of their learners.
On
the home page of the website, there is a button that says “Power up your
classroom.” Clicking this or even simply scrolling down will bring you to this
section. Here you can find a list of different strategies for ELA and Math. The
ELA strategies are great promoting literacy. Each strategy provides steps for
implementation, supporting materials such as videos and lesson plans, and the
research behind the effectiveness of the strategy. This is great for a teacher
who might not have any experience on training on how to implement the strategy.
For
every implementation recommendation made, evidence is provided, supporting the
effectiveness. This is great for teachers who might be uncertain about whether
or not a strategy will work for them. These strategies promote literacy because
they focus on specific skills such as questioning, monitoring understanding,
writing, summarizing, and many others. Although this website was specifically
created with special needs students in mind, I think teachers of all students,
subjects, and grade levels can find something to use in their classrooms to
promote literacy.
