Overview

The Classroom Strategies provides teachers with dozens of activities they can do before, during, or after a text. In addition, the strategies are organized into categories that include: Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency, Phonological Awareness, Writing, and Vocabulary. For each strategy, teachers can click its name, and the website will explain when, how, and why teachers can use a strategy.
    Reading Rockets’ Classroom Strategies
                                  A High- Quality Literacy Resource

 Ideas provided by Reading Rockets:
  • When planning instruction, teachers can consult this list of strategies and choose ones that are most applicable to their lesson and text.
  • For each text teachers have students engage, they can choose a different strategy to use. Over the course of time, teachers will become familiar with multiple strategies offered by this website and knowingly select the ones they wish to use.
  • Teachers can use this website for professional development. To do so, a group of teachers can all teach the same text using the same reading strategy as listed by this website. After their lessons, the teachers can meet as a group, discuss the experience their students had using the strategy, and then decide if changes to how the strategy was used need to be made. If so, the teachers can discuss those modifications before using the strategy again.

Reading Rockets Review: What Works And What Does Not!

Reading Rockets’ is a website “teaching kids to read and helping those who struggle”. To me, much of the content on this site reads as a research paper or book. The book would come in chapters, including parents, teachers, principals, librarians, and other professionals. Each chapter is rich in resources, tools, and tips for the appropriate category. The left-hand panel of the site functions as a type of introduction, as well as an index; it gives the basics of teaching reading and simple ideas and tips for classroom strategies and techniques to help struggling readers. It also contains FAQ’s and a glossary, as well other helpful resources. In particular, I am going to focus on the teachers’ section.

One of the reasons this material works particularly well in an online format is because it is constantly being updated with new information. It’s featured stories at the top of the page are helpful content -based tips. The site also includes a plethora of videos that really assist the main points.

However, I find the layout to be distracting and at times confusing. Although there are very few ads, the format appears to be filled with them. I think a cleaner, simpler layout would be more appropriate here. Furthermore, I think that the section for new teachers, which should be one of the most full and diverse section, is very lacking. I did not really find resources there that would be helpful to me as a new teacher.

Despite its flaws, overall, I think Reading Rockets mission statement holds true:
Reading Rockets’ offers a wealth of reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. Our reading resources assist parents, teachers, and other educators in helping struggling readers build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. I do enjoy using it as one of my literacy website.

Where Children Have Fun Learning to Read

The Starfall is one of the largest and best educational websites around. If you are a parent, chances are you have already come across on this great website.
The Starfall teaches through play, with hundreds of games in the categories like reading, writing, moths, etc. The screenplay is very straightforward, with simple, colorful graphics. The systematic approach, in conjunction with audiovisual interactivity, is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, even home school, and ELL, ELD, and ESL. Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.
The Starfall low-cost membership program expands the free content you already enjoy to include the amazing animated songs, mathematics, and reading activities spanning Pre-K to 2nd grade. WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW about ABCya.com?

The parents need to know that ABCya is an educational games website that organizes games by grade level (K-5) and subject categories, including letters, numbers, holiday games, and more. Their games include arcade-style that kids use arrow keys to play, word find games that can be played on screen or printed, racing games that can be played virtually against other players, typing games, and more. Some of the games may require a parent or teacher to read brief instructions, but mostly – they are very self-explanatory which is nice.
WHAT ABCYA’s ALL ABOUT?
Students has to select the appropriate grade level (K-5) from the home page. Then, they choose a category of games: Letters, Numbers, More (Shapes, Patterns, Geometry, Mouse Manipulation, and Art), Holiday, or Just for Fun. Next, kids tap on a game that looks interesting and read the instructions. Some games include grade levels within the game, so kids may need to choose their grade level again. A few games include multiplayer gaming, which requires kids to create a username to play. A passcode can be set on the games so that only kids within the same class or friends who know the passcode can access the same game. Gameplay may include the use of the mouse, arrow keys, keyboard, and its pintables.
IS ABCYA ANY GOOD?

ABCya give kids the freedom to choose from dozens of safe, educational games categorized in ways that even younger kids can probably begin to conceptualize why certain games are grouped with others. The site creators say they need to include some ads in order to keep the site free for all users, and the ads (other than on the main page), aren't terribly invasive. Still, the prevalence of ads is the only downside to this otherwise the ABCya is well-organized, fun, and stickily educational gaming website.

K–12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum Scope& Sequence
The free Comprehensive Curriculum is designed to empower students.  For students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in the evolution  of the 21st century. From lesson plans, videos, student inter-actives, and assessments, professional learning and family outreach materials, the Curriculum provides schools with everything they need to take a whole community approach to digital citizenship.
ABCYA’s Platform
The Platform was created by a public school teacher. This way, it conforms to certain conditions including the focus to K-5 grade levels. The site is a platform for for holding many games, and new ones that are added annually.
The site itself is easy to navigate and user friendly for both adult and kids.
       ABCYA’s Components
After you download the app, you have two options, a family login or class login page. The difference between the two is based on the original registration process, where an individual or family login requires an e-mail and password with basic info. The class login is school-based, and the process is between the school and the site, so all kids in the class can connect using the same login codes.
The site has a nice list of links under the Parents and Teachers tab, and you can connect to their FAQ, about the site and other settings and pages.
There are over 300 games and activities on the site, and they are accessible through category or grade. Each game has a grade relevance indicator, and each grade holds the games relevant to its age group.

The seven ages groups are:
Preschool, Kindergarten, 1,2,3,4, and 5
As an example, in the age group category (Pre-K) Pre-School, are the following word games  ABC and 123 Magnets

In this game, the children can practice the alphabet, number, and punctuation recognition. They do this by clicking and dragging magnets to the refrigerator. The program reads out the letter or number when the child clicks it on a magnet. This game can be used to practice basic writing skills.
All About Me
This is the first day at school kind of simulator, where the player is asked to answer different questions about themselves. This is a step-by-step process, making the game structured, and the answers are displayed in a fun pattern.
Alphabet BINGO
Alphabet BINGO is all about learning the alphabet in a fun way. In this game, children will hear an animated character say a letter and the player has to click on the correct letter. The display can be toggled between upper and lower case.
Other pre-K word games samples include:
           1.      Alphabet Bubble

2.      Alphabet Slider Puzzle
     3.      Alphabetical Order
     4.      Alphabetical Order Bubble
     5.      Connect the Dots ABC
Let’s jump over to the 2nd Grade and look at their holiday games. These games represent two popular religions and US national holidays, instilling the child with an understanding of the icons that represent holidays while providing some exciting interaction. The religions are Christianity and Judaism, I expect that sometime during the next year they will add Islamic games too, but Islam has yet to become a national identified religion

Second Grade Holiday Sample Games:

Ghost Typing
Halloween Candy Hunt
Halloween Hop
Halloween Candy Hunt
 Halloween Hop

 Halloween Word Search
Hanukkah Word Search Hanukkah Word Search is a word puzzle game providing two grid sizes. The larger one is for longer words, and the shorter one, yes, for shorter words.
  Make a Christmas Tree
Make a Gingerbread House
Make a Pumpkin
Make a Snowman
Valentine’s Day Word Search
Write a Letter to Santa. This is the ABCya writing activity game for helping children write letters to Santa. It helps teach them both rewriting and also understanding what Santa all about is. (If you explain it properly).
If you jump over to the 5th-grade list of strategy games, then the list is seriously overpopulated with choices, and this is a good thing.
There are over 100 Fifth Grade Strategy Games, but we shortened the list for those games with different level rates such as Andy’s Golf 1 & 2, this is, in reality, two different games in the same series, It’s counted as one.
ABCya. com Make Me A Backpack ABCya.com Make Me A Cookie

Make me a…backpack, a Cookie…
The make me games are construction games that give the child the ability to learn design. It also teaches them attention to detail b offering all kinds of additional accessories, toppings, colors, etc. Creativity is the key here, and there are a number of Make me games on Abcya to make them enjoyable, time and again.

 ABCya.com Halloween Word Search

Halloween Word Search is a classic game, it’s a seasonal take on a word search game, and focuses your child’s attention to words associated with Halloween. There are a number of such
REVIEWS:

1)      From Parents Choice: A review was written by Karena Rush, Ph. D. in 2014. Rush opens up with “ABCya contains free, fun educational games and is a good place to find new and original educational activities as well as the tried and true. “Rush concludes with these words “The variety of these games designed for children in grades K-5 will keep kids coming back for more fun and learning, while parents and teachers will want to recommend and share this site with one another.”
2)    From Common Sense Education review website:
Posted by Kristin G., Classroom teacher from East Buchanan Elementary School, Gower, United States
Kristine opens with this statement “There are several reasons why I believe this is a great website to use in the classroom. One reason I like it so much is that many of the games have different levels. “ Kristine concludes with these remarks “Basically, if you are looking for a safe website that is easy to use where students can practice skills, then ABCya is the website for you and your students.”
3)    The Childs Point of View
Any review that discusses apps for children should include a critique made by the player, and in this case, these are children. So, there is a cute 8-year-old child playing with this system for over 3 years now. He started off with the basics but fell in love with the strategy games such as duck race and blocks.
The main attraction to these games was competitive. With strategy and arcade types of games, it’s pretty obvious when you win or lose. With numbers and words its fuzzier, since they don’t lose, they just get a right or wrong answer and try again.
Education World gave ABCya an A-A+ rating, here is their site’s reasons:
A for content: “ABCya provides Web-based educational games and activities that have been created by teachers for primary and elementary school students.”
A+ for site design: “The site is visually stimulating and easy to navigate. Some of the kindergarten and first-grade activities have audio instructions.”

ABCya.com Registration/ Checking your Account

The process is simple, you press the login button and then choose the “new subscription” option, as a parent I choose the family plan that costs $6.99 per month. Pressing the family plan subscription button, I then agree to the terms and conditions of the site and am transferred to the payment screen. It is a very simple screen, just key in your card details and wait for the subscription screen to return. Now go check your e-mail account, Click on your name; it is on the top right-hand corner of the PC screen, the one you used to register. You then press the confirm account mail you received, and this will open an account confirmation page where you key in your details and password. You are all set up to now enjoy the site in full. Enjoy your subscription and Have fun!

Conclusions

There are so many games here, this platform is constantly adding new games, and if you have a strong internet connection, your children will enjoy uninterrupted hours of educational fun. What I do strongly suggest is that you verify the types of games your children play. The strategy games tend to overtake the number and word games, so always make sure your children play at least one word and one number game a day to improve these skills before going over to the logic and strategy games that end up leasing to basic online playing.
This site compliments the education system and is a fun platform to have at home and also in the school classroom. This is a must app as well as a great desktop go-to game page. The additional bonus is the constantly expanding library of games, and the ever-increasing levels of popular titles, that give children a chance to continue playing with their favorite games on different levels.

After my thorough research about the ABCya.com, I must admit that this is an excellent program for your children. I have been using it in my library and it does accommodate everyone regardless of age.

One of the best thing about the PowerUp is their Slogan.
The slogans are an eye catcher. When I looked over their information, I was pretty overwhelmed. There is a huge amount of resources, the integration of advance technology in the classroom, strategies, and practical tips to personalize the instruction using technology to meet the needs of the special children and the struggling students as well.
The site is so empowering. For example, if you are an administrator, the PowerUp will provide you with the tools necessary to build an effective, school-wide technology infrastructure to transform your school’s teaching and learning. The PowerUp recognize the importance and potential benefit of technology for students with disabilities, The PowerUp have a places to provide the reliable information and tools, curated resources, guidance, and support for the disability children.
I find the PowerUp to have the best resources and tools that represent best practices that are actually accessible to all the users, including those with cognitive and mental disabilities.
The PowerUp Meets You Where You are! With increasing demand of technologies, I find it hard for me to catch up but with PowerUp, it’s not a problem for their students. The PowerUp follows you anywhere. The program has now hold a lot of assistive technology features and most of them if not all of it are moving into mainstream educational technology. The rapid changes in technology will continue to shape the future of special education, blurring the lines between assistive technology and mainstream educational technology. The PowerUp is ready To Meet You Where You Are! It’s ensuring your success to write and learn the best possible education.
The PowerUp is also supported by AIR(American Institutes for Research)
This program has assisted PowerUp and has been a leader in Assistive and Educational Technology Research and to their Technical Assistance projects to support Education as they navigate the shifting technology landscape in Special Education. From the article that I have read, the AIR has provide and target the technical assistance to support the state, district, and many school leaders as they mandate the usage of technology to unlock the strengths of all students    especially the one with disabilities.
The PowerUp Support the Formative assessment. The question that has been frequently asked is- how can technology support teachers in their use of formative assessment across different subject areas to better serve the needs of strugglers? I find this blog account https://whatworks.org/blog/empowering-teachers-technology-formative-assessment-personalize-learning  to answer your FAQ. I hope this helps you give more insights about PowerUp. Let me know if you find it helpful.
There is also a sign-up for the PowerUp Spotlight Newsletter.
I would like to do more research about PowerUp for an older special needs children. I think this program will benefit our district if we are able to use it.

FAREWELL POST

From start to finish, this course has provided me with an incredible knowledge that will forever change me.  I had the most amazing time during the Fall-Intersession class.

Yes, ED638-40 is going to end but the memento will remain that I have the most amazing colleagues in the class and with my “Bes” on it. It was awe and esteem being in the group of modest and professional people.

                     Here is to you...
BIBA DR. RIVERA!
Hafa Adai Dr. Rivera!
I have enjoyed ED638-40 as much as the previous one. I feel like a new "ME" when it comes to Technology. You have taught me so well and so much that I may not be able to accomplish all that on my own. Everything that I learned from the class is something that I will be able to say to someone that "...Oh, I know how to do that!" However, the timing for the class may not exactly be the best because of the holidays and unfortunately it is the busiest time of the year to everyone. I went through it and did what I could to cope between the holidays and the course. It was also the most difficult situation for me due to my sister's passing. That was TOUGH! You helped me go through it and you gave me a lot of encouragement. You are firm but kind, considerate, and affectionate to our needs. I am indebted to all that kindness that you have given me.  Dr. Rivera...my hat is off to you!
Note how I chose the video...you took me to all that places (just like Google Earth) during the course...I learned so much that I didn't have to go anywhere or ask anyone to help me. Your guidance was perfect for me. Thanks so much again.

V/r,
Sylvia O. Taylor
