IRA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #3
The National Children’s Literacy
Website (http://www.child2000.org/lit-tipsMenu.htm) is a nonprofit, simple, free website dedicated to promoting literacy in
the home, school, and even child care setting. While it mostly seems to be
geared for parents, teachers can also find the content useful. The website’s
interface is very simple, which can make it easy for individuals who might not
be too familiar with using the internet. There are no distracting ads, making
it very easy to find information.
Clicking start on the homepage redirects to the website with a list of
tips and information on reading and literacy. Although the website may not be
popular, it is a hidden gem on the internet because there are great tips
provided including cost-efficient ways to promote literacy.
For parents who might be wondering
how to promote and incorporate literacy in their homes, this website is a great
source to use as a reference. There are great tips that can easily be
incorporated into everyday life such as teaching and showing children that
words can be found almost everywhere, showing children that you (as a parent)
read and write too, and providing a designated area for children to read. The
section on story-time tips is great for parents and families because it
encourages parents to read with their children making it a family affair.
Creating positive family environments when reading can contribute to a growth
in literacy in the home.
This website is great for parents in
Guam because of the ease of access and all the information provided. Teachers
can introduce this website to their students and parents and challenge them to
incorporate and regularly practice the small, but profound ways they can
promote literacy in their homes. For parents and families who may have
difficulty purchasing books, the website also includes tips for visiting the
local library, which is free. Additionally, the website provides some tips for
saving money when getting books. Parents, teachers, and students can take
whatever tips and information is most appropriate for them.
