IRA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #2
The International Literacy Association is a website dedicated to providing resources to ensure literacy is accessible to everyone.  In the website you can find worldwide statistics regarding literacy and they have created this website as one solution to way in which professionals can promote and encourage literacy. The website offers several membership options, however, many resources are still accessible even without a paid membership.
This website contains many great resources. For any educators, parents, and even students new to the idea of literacy and the vocabulary related to literacy, there is a glossary in the website that can help one become familiarized with the terminology.  One great feature is the list of new words added to the glossary. There are new ideas that may come about in literacy so this allows visitors to be aware of what terms or phrases might be new.  Teachers of all content areas can do their part in promoting literacy. There is a document that provides teachers with tips for assessing reading and writing. This helps remove the stigma that only Language Arts teachers can promote literacy.
This is a useful website for all levels and for countries other than the United States. Literacy is continuously changing because of advances in technology and the content in this website is updated with this in mind. Educators must understand that most of the students in schools today are exposed to the online world. For students today, a lot of reading and writing is done on social media websites and applications. The International Literacy Association’s website provides us with only the most updated and research-based information on literacy.
